Using the Journeys website

Creating your map

To plot a map, dataset or photo to Google Earth click on its corresponding checkbox. Can’t see your selection appearing on Google Earth? Try zooming in a bit on the map of Victoria (it could be small!), or maybe it’s still loading. To take an item off your map just un-tick its corresponding checkbox.

Taking a tour

Under the Tour category click on the tour you’d like to take. The tour will automatically start playing on Google Earth. To stop, pause, or replay the tour bring up the tour control bar by rolling over any part of Google Earth. To exit the tour just click on Exit Tour.

Using multiple layers

To create your own map mashup just click on the checkboxes next to the corresponding items you’d like to plot on Google Earth. Maybe you want to plot Victoria’s modern day railways against the Map of Victorian Railways 1879. It’s your map so enjoy!

Using opacity

Want to mash up the present with the past? Just click on the opacity icon next to your selected map and let the fun begin!

Uploading data

Got a map, a photo, a dataset or a tour you’d like to add to the Journeys library for others to use? Click on the Add Data main menu label. Give the data a name, a category and a brief description. Then upload the item from your computer or from a URL link. For now the data you upload has to be in kml or kmz format.

Where does the Journeys library data come from?

The data comes from a range of cultural organisations, government departments and individuals who have granted permission for it to be used on the Journeys website. See Sources for details.

Blog

It’s early days yet but we are building a community so drop round sometime to the Journeys blog for a listen or a yack.
